VISA GUIDE
F-1
The visa for full-time academic study in the US
The F1 visa lets you enroll as a full-time student at a SEVP-certified US school. You'll need an I-20 from your school, a paid SEVIS I-901 fee, and an approved DS-160 before your visa interview.
F1 status is issued for the length of your academic program plus a grace period. It comes with rules on funding, work authorization, and travel that differ meaningfully from a tourist or work visa, so most of the FAQs below focus on those day-to-day practicalities rather than the initial application.
